Canada is turning against Trudeau over immigration.
Nelson McCausland Canada was one of the most pro-immigration countries in the world and in 2019 it was ranked the most accepting country for immigrants in a survey of 145 countries, but Canadian public opinion has certainly shifted. A recent opinion poll on attitudes to immigration shows that 65% of Canadians believe the Liberal government's current immigration targets are too high. When he came to power in 2015, almost a decade ago, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau opened the floodgates for new immigrants pouring into Canada and last year the federal government released its current Immigration Levels Plan, to welcome 485,000 permanent residents in 2024 and 500,000 in 2025 and 2026. Polling shows that 78% of Canadians believe high levels of immigration are contributing to the national housing shortage, while 76% believe it is having a negative impact on healthcare. Rising concerns about the number of immigrants are evident across Canada but are most evident in Ontario and British Columbia. This is one of the factors that has resulted in a dramatic decline in his popularity. According to one poll tracker, his approval rate has plummeted from 63% when he was first elected to just 28% in June of this year. Immigration is a major political issue and not only in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, it is an issue in many other countries too.
